DMV Info

Best time to book an Appointment with the DMV

Most Ideal - Weekdays from 10am - 11am

Or at least from 10am - 2pm to Avoid Elementary School Zones

Also, Early Morning Saturdays

(Examiners take an hour lunch together from 12pm - 1pm)

Best time to check for future Appointments are early mornings and late nights (that's usually when people cancel) and the booking Calendar opens up daily

Tip - Pick the DMV that you are around most often. You will be used to driving that area of town and those streets. And will most likely pass in an area you are more familiar and comfortable with.

IMPORTANT

1. You must confirm your Appointment within 30 minutes by text or    email - (email is safer) less likely for them to randomly cancel on you.

2. Get there 15 minutes early or even earlier to stand in line to get checked in. It might take some time, and you don't want to be late once you are at the desk. Have your permit in hand, they ask for that first, and then registration & insurance, followed by anything else.

3. You CANNOT use a rental car. The insurance and registration names do not match. You can use a friend or family members car, as long as the same name is listed on the insurance & registration.

Or you can rent a driving school car. Lots of driving schools offer a package deal with some lessons and a vehicle rental.

At our school we do not offer a package (with a rental car), because everyone learns at different speeds. One person might need more lessons than another to become ready for their test. However, we do offer a car rental after at least one lesson to see how your driving is and whether you need more lessons or not.

4. By law if you are under 18 you must have 50 hours of logged driving time. If you are 18 and over, by law you don't need any hours of logged time, but we recommend at least 25 hours of practice with someone. That way you at least know the basics of car Handling, Maneuvering, Meaning of Traffic Signs, different Intersections, Right of Ways, and some Defensive driving. This will take time, and the Examiners can tell if you are NEW to driving in the first few minutes.

5. For All Ages - If you are from out of state, you can practice driving here with another states permit, but you must re-take the permit test in NV to be able to actually do the driving (Skills Test) here in this state. Same with someone from outside of USA, you must take our states permit (Written Test) first, before being eligible for the driving test. To practice legally, you must have one of two things, a license that says INTERNATIONAL at the top, or a NV learners permit.

6. If your Permit is about to expire, try to renew it before the expiration date, that way you don't have to redo all your paperwork again. The DMV gives you (One Month grace period) before having to re-take the Permit/Written Test again.

If the DMV says you do not need a Permit to practice driving in NV if you are over 18, THIS IS WRONG! If you are stopped by Police or something happens while driving, you will not be valid by any insurance company with just your (Congratulations you Passed your Permit Test Paper), nor legal to drive on the road. The DMV says this because they think you will test right after you pass your test and therefore don't need to wait 2 weeks for your permit to come in the mail. But even so, if something happens during your driving test, insurance and police will not accept you without a valid Temporary Learners Permit paper, or Learners Permit Card.

Continued DMV Info

Each DMV has about 15-20 routes each, and they can do them backwards. They try to have lots of variations, especially if you have to re-take the test many times, they try not to use the same examiner and same route twice.

The best advice is to use the DMV that you live closest to, that way you are familiar with that area and it's streets. You will most likely pass with something you are comfortable with, regardless of how strict or lenient the DMV is.

They are all tough in their own ways, and no-one likes the DMV experience anyways. Try and simplify your life with just using the closest one if you can.

Driver's Ed

There are 3 different types of Driver's Ed in Nevada

1. 30 Hour Online Driver's Ed - Many Online Options

2. In Class Driver's Ed - At Safeway Driving School

3. 15/5 Driver's Ed - Online & Behind the Wheel

The only one that requires Behind the wheel driving is the 15/5 option. Which means 15 hours online course and 5 hours behind the wheel with a driving school. Most schools only offer 2 hour lessons, so it will technically be 15/6 - 15 hours online course & 6 hours of driving lessons. Our school offers a certificate upon request for the 3 lessons - 6 hours.

Las Vegas DMV's

There is a total of 4 DMV's in Las Vegas. Each area of Vegas is different; here are some tips for each DMV -

1. North - Decatur DMV

2. East - Sahara DMV

3. South - Henderson DMV - Changing locations by Dec

4. West - Flamingo DMV

Tip - Pick the DMV that you are around most often. You will be used to driving that area of town and those streets. And will most likely pass in an area you are more familiar and comfortable with. If you try to schedule a test in a neighboring city like Pahrump or Mesquite, they will not accept you with your Las Vegas area code.

Noth Decatur DMV

Decatur DMV is all the way North of town on the outskirts of the desert. It is the most laid-back DMV in Las Vegas, and it also has an easy parking lot to mauver. The difficulty of Decatur DMV is that this side of town is missing lots of warning signage and the streets aren't always marked with lines or dots. There are many areas that randomly merge together because the streets are not fully developed.

East Sahara DMV

Sahara DMV is in a very difficult part of town. With narrow streets and illegal J-walkers everywhere, it also has lots of old traffic lights with (left turn yield on green circle light not flashing yellow arrow), which is less common in other areas of town. Most of the routes are 25, 30, or 35mph, on the slower side. But Sahara is not for the faint of heart, this area is aggressive especially during school zones and rush hours. Attempt Sahara DMV only if you are used to high traffic situations.

South Henderson DMV

Henderson DMV is on the easier side of town, simple streets mostly neighborhood routes, but there are some tricky intersections for people who are not used to this area. It has (large single lane) roundabouts that could be on the test, an area that is 40mph which is unusual for Las Vegas, a very difficult circular parking lot with a hill, most streets have large bike and bus lanes, and lots of yellow center lanes for turning left. Even with all of this mentioned it is still one of the easier DMV's to pass. But again, if you are not familiar with the area, this will be a challenge. Henderson DMV will be closing down their facility and moving its location to the Enterprise area (West of Southpoint Casino) by December 2026.

West Flamingo DMV

Flamingo DMV is notorious for being a difficult DMV, they have strict rules and guidelines and have been known to make up their own rules on the driving tests. Although this year 2026, they have been more relaxed since past years. Many of the streets near Flamingo are major roads with 3 lanes - 45pmh, with lots of long neighborhoods at 25mph. (Keep an eye on your speed) with these drastic speed changes. Flamingo DMV as well as Sahara DMV, are around many types of schools, making it difficult to pass during school zone times.
